Purchasing \u05d3\u2019 \u05de\u05d9\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd\u00a0 in the \u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05d8\u05d4 year.<\/b><\/p>\n

1- Our Gemara, after explaining of <\/span>why <\/span><\/i>buying the \u05d3\u2019 \u05de\u05d9\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd needs to be transacted in a particular way, discusses if the \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea issue pertains only to the\u00a0 Esrog (a fruit\/vegetable) or the Lulav (basically wood) as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2- The general question is if wood harvested during \u05e9\u05de\u05d9\u05d8\u05d4 has \u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9\u05ea \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea .<\/span><\/p>\n

It would seem from the \u05d7\u05d5\u05de\u05e9\u2019s wording that the produce of \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea are \u05d4\u05e4\u05e7\u05e8 for all <\/span>\u05dc\u05d0\u05db\u05dc\u05d4<\/b>, to eat, that the intention is to exclude items from the field that are <\/span>not <\/span><\/i>edible, such as firewood.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But the \u05e4\u05e1\u05d5\u05e7 adds <\/span>\u05dc\u05db\u05dd <\/b>\u05dc\u05d0\u05db\u05dc\u05d4. The \u05dc\u05db\u05dd is adding more than just edible foods into the category of \u05e4\u05d9\u05e8\u05d5\u05ea \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So our Gemara suggests that if using wood in a manner that is <\/span>similar <\/b>to food usage\/consumption, then \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea would apply to it as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Can<\/p>\n

What does <\/span>similar <\/b>mean? When eating food, the consumption and enjoyment occur simultaneously. The food is swallowed (\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d5\u05e8) and enjoyed at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Premium<\/p>\n

When using wood for warmth, the wood too is burned and the heat produced and enjoyed simultaneously.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So designating wood for <\/span>heating <\/b>would label the wood with \u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9\u05ea \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea since it is similar to edible food.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"No<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

However, as per Rashi, using firewood to <\/span>bake<\/span><\/i>, for example, the wood is first consumed (turned into coal) and only then does the baking (enjoyment\/usage) occur.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Bread<\/p>\n

We mentioned that \u05e8\u05d1\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05d7\u05e0\u05e0\u05d0\u05dc does not differentiate between cooking and baking. The Ritva adds that simply speaking, whether baking or cooking, the enjoyment of eating occurs after the wood is all gone!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

4- From the above it would seem that the \u05dc\u05d5\u05dc\u05d1, just like firewood for baking, does not have \u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9\u05ea \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Broom<\/p>\n

But here is the clincher – a \u05dc\u05d5\u05dc\u05d1 is generally not used for firewood. The leaves of the palm tree are primarily used as brooms. So when does the consumption of a \u05dc\u05d5\u05dc\u05d1 (when used as a broom) occur? Simultaneously with the use and enjoyment – just like food and therefore a \u05dc\u05d5\u05dc\u05d1 does have \u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9\u05ea \u05e9\u05d1\u05d9\u05e2\u05d9\u05ea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5- The Gemara discusses a certain type of timber that is used as candles. The combustion and enjoyment happen at the same time with these wood-candles.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

6 –\u00a0 We read the uncommon words of Rashi about a version of the Gemara. Despite the fact that all his teachers used this particular \u05e0\u05d5\u05e1\u05d7, including Rabeinu Gershom \u05de\u05d0\u05d5\u05e8 \u05d4\u05d2\u05d5\u05dc\u05d4,<\/a> \u2018I have been attempting to understand this version since my youth without success\u2019!!<\/span><\/p>\n
