We added another tidbit to the Rebbe\u2019s take on this. In 1962 an author sent to the Rebbe his \u05e1\u05e4\u05e8 containing charts on <\/span>\u05de\u05e1\u05db\u05ea \u05d9\u05d1\u05de\u05d5\u05ea \u05d5\u05e7\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd<\/span> . The author used symbols to explain the many scenarios of family relationships concerning marriages, \u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05dd and \u05d7\u05dc\u05d9\u05e6\u05d4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Drain to Shiloah…<\/p>\n

Rabba bar bar \u1e24ana said<\/b> that <\/span>Rabbi Yo\u1e25anan said: The drainpipes [<\/b>shisin<\/i><\/b>]<\/b> built into the altar and extending beneath it <\/span>were created during the six days of Creation, as it is stated: \u201cThe hidden of your thighs are like jewels, the handiwork of a skilled workman\u201d<\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Gemara interprets the verse homiletically:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cYour hidden thighs\u201d; these are the drainpipes<\/b> that are concealed within the altar;<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201care like jewels [<\/b>\u1e25ala\u2019im<\/i><\/b>]\u201d; they are hollow [<\/b>me\u1e25olalin<\/i><\/b>] and descend to the depths; \u201cthe handiwork of a skilled workman\u201d; this is the handiwork of the Holy One, Blessed be He.<\/b><\/p>\n

The word<\/span> \u05d7\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e7\u05b5\u05d9 literally means hidden. The \u05d2\u05de\u05e8\u05d0 says that it refers to the hidden drainpipes that were in the \u05de\u05d6\u05d1\u05d7 that extended to the \u05ea\u05d4\u05d5\u05dd\u00a0 – groundwater flows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5 – The topic of <\/span>\u05d7\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05d7\u05e1\u05e8\u05d9 \u05d5\u05d4\u05db\u05d9 \u05e7\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9<\/b>. This is an expression mentioned many times in \u05e9\u201d\u05e1\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It applies to a discussion in \u05d2\u05de\u05e8\u05d0 where we are trying to decipher a cryptic and difficult statement in a particular Mishna.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u05d2\u05de\u05e8\u05d0 suggests an explanation<\/b>,\u00a0 but the issue is – that is not what is stated in the \u05de\u05e9\u05e0\u05d4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Erase<\/p>\n

The \u05d2\u05de\u05e8\u05d0 then suggests that to understand the Mishna\u00a0 \u05d7\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05d7\u05e1\u05e8\u05d9 \u05d5\u05d4\u05db\u05d9 \u05e7\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9.<\/span><\/p>\n

We mentioned that there are 3 ways to understand this statement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A – \u05d7\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05d7\u05e1\u05e8\u05d9 – The version we have in our Mishnah is simply incorrect; it\u2019s missing a few words.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u05d5\u05d4\u05db\u05d9 \u05e7\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9 – and it should say so and so. Why the text was not corrected is another topic. BL\u201dN next week.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

B – Prior to \u05e8\u05d1\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05d4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9 there were many schools of \u05ea\u05e0\u05d0\u05d9\u05dd, each with its particular version of the myriad of\u00a0 \u05d4\u05dc\u05db\u05d5\u05ea that eventually were compiled into the \u05de\u05e9\u05e0\u05d9\u05d5\u05ea. Each school had its tradition as to what the text and the\u00a0 \u05d4\u05dc\u05db\u05d4 is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now Rebi chose the \u2018<\/span>Reb Meir Edition\u2019<\/b>. He decided that this version is the correct one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sanhedrin 86<\/a> …<\/span>\u05dc\u05d0 \u05e1”\u05d3 \u05d3\u05d0\u05de\u05e8 \u05e8’ \u05d9\u05d5\u05d7\u05e0\u05df \u05e1\u05ea\u05dd \u05de\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9’ \u05e8’ \u05de\u05d0\u05d9\u05e8<\/p>\n

Generations later when the \u05d0\u05de\u05d5\u05e8\u05d0\u05d9\u05dd tried to decipher the \u05de\u05e9\u05e0\u05d9\u05d5\u05ea, as codified by Rebi, they encountered difficulties. It caused them to state that \u05d7\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05d7\u05e1\u05e8\u05d9 \u05d5\u05d4\u05db\u05d9 \u05e7\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9, meaning that the \u05d4\u05dc\u05db\u05d4 is, not<\/strong> as Rebi wrote. Rather the correct version is the Mishna edition of <\/span>another <\/b>school and their tradition.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

C – The explanation offered is indeed correct. The reason it does not fit into the words of the \u05de\u05e9\u05e0\u05d4 as we see it, is for the following reason:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u05e8\u05d1\u05d9\u05e0\u05d5 \u05d4\u05e7\u05d3\u05d5\u05e9 who wrote or compiled the Misnayos chose to write it using very few words. \u05d1\u05d3\u05e8\u05da \u05e7\u05e6\u05e8\u05d4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Less<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, the words he <\/span>did <\/b>write were carefully chosen in a way that future generations, when trying to understand the Mishna, by analyzing these short words, would see that Rebi hinted to the suggested explanation thereby solving the problems that would arise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So \u05d7\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9 \u05de\u05d7\u05e1\u05e8\u05d9 means that the meaning of the words of the \u05de\u05e9\u05e0\u05d4 lack ones understanding at first. By applying oneself diligently to the Mishna, by spending time to grasp its true meaning then \u05d5\u05d4\u05db\u05d9 \u05e7\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9 , one will see that Rebi actually meant to say this very explanation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

6 – Mentioned the \u05e4\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd \u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea (BO) who ties the above, the application to Torah study, to the \u05e4\u05e1\u05d5\u05e7 our \u05d2\u05de\u05e8\u05d0 quotes regarding the \u2018hidden drain pipes\u2019 inside the \u05de\u05d6\u05d1\u05d7.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u00a0\u05d7\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e7\u05b5\u05d9 \u05d9\u05b0\u05e8\u05b5\u05db\u05b7\u05d9\u05b4\u05da\u05b0 hidden thighs or pipes, refers to what is hidden in the words of \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4 has its simple meaning. However, the hidden aspect of \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4 needs to be \u2018dug\u2019 in order to understand their deeper meaning.\u00a0 A person should not become depressed when encountering difficulty in understanding \u05ea\u05d5\u05e8\u05d4. On the contrary, his lack of understanding is a sign that G-d wants him to work hard until he figures out the \u05e4\u05e9\u05d8.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Shavuot:<\/p>\n

As the \u05e8\u05de\u201d\u05e2 \u05de\u05e4\u05d0\u05e0\u05d5 writes: \u05d7\u05b7\u05de\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e7\u05b5\u05d9 is the \u05e8\u05d0\u05e9\u05d9 \u05ea\u05d9\u05d1\u05d5\u05ea of <\/span>\u05d7<\/b>\u05e1\u05d5\u05e8\u05d9 <\/b>\u05de<\/b>\u05d7\u05e1\u05e8\u05d9 <\/b>\u05d5<\/b>\u05d4\u05db\u05d9 <\/b>\u05e7<\/b>\u05ea\u05e0\u05d9!<\/b><\/p>\n
